Speed dry oil painting. If you live in a humid climate get a small dehumidifier and place it near your painting. Use fast drying mediums oil paints take days weeks or sometimes even months to completely dry. Your paint would dry much slower if you mix it with poppyseed oil compared to the standard linseed oil. Varnishing is not technically necessary for a finished painting but any oil painting with unevenly dull and glossy areas will benefit from applying varnish.
You will probably find that your paint will dry a lot faster than 6 12 months. Safflower oil is a moderately fast drying oil while the slowest drying oil is poppy seed oil. As discussed earlier the oil medium you use will influence the drying time. And since some colors dry glossier than others varnish can even out the surface overall.
For art commissions and works with stringent time limits you may do better by using a faster drying medium such as acrylics watercolor gouache and even digital painting. Oil paint will oxidize faster in dry air. But when using drying mediums it can accelerate the drying time at a much faster rate. You can slow the drying time of oil paint by adding more oil.
For example alizarin crimson is more glossy than raw umber or ultramarine. The various oils used as mediums in oil painting are known as drying oils. The term is used as a reminder that different types have different drying times and properties. This will remove excess humidity from the air helping speed the drying time of the oil paint.
These mediums are mixed with oil paint both to modify the way the paint handles straight from the tube for example make it thinner or lengthen the drying time and to alter the character of the paint from what you get. Most people use linseed oil for painting whereas poppy seed oil is excellent for keeping your paint brushes wet in between painting sessions. But using just any drying medium won t do. I find the the best way to dry a painting is to have it in an airy well ventilated room where it gets plenty of cross breeze.
